Habitat for Humanity NI and The Federation of Master Builders (FMB NI) are delighted to announce their new partnership to help raise funds for Habitat’s HOPE Builder Challenge in 2014.
Habitat’s HOPE Builder challenge is a fantastic, tangible way for companies and organisations to challenge themselves to raise funds to help transform the lives of families around the world. HOPE Builder’s help give families living in poverty the ultimate gift of a decent home and a brighter future.
Globally, an estimated 1.6 billion people are trapped in poverty by the place where they live. For many families around the world, home is a rotting shack made of scavenged materials; a plastic tent in a refugee camp or a crumbling apartment block with no access to toilets or clean water. This means children and their families are left vulnerable to the elements, to exploitation, eviction and disease.
Every day, in over 70 countries around the world Habitat is working with families to help them to build their own way out of poverty, through building, renovation or repairing their homes. The average cost of a Habitat home in the developing world is only £1,235 – not much when you consider that’s approximately 1% of the average house price in Northern Ireland.
Dianne Whyte, Corporate Relations Manager, Habitat NI said: “We are delighted to have the support of FMB and their members and challenge them to help build as many homes as they can this year. Our homes really are at the centre of our human experience, but for so many life is a dilapidated shack at the side of the road, or three generations crammed into one room. It’s not acceptable, but we can do something about it. The support we receive from FMB will change families’ lives, not just in 2014 but for generations to come and that’s amazing”.
Maire Nawaz, NI Director, FMB said: “I am pleased to announce that FMB Northern Ireland members have selected Habitat for Humanity as their chosen charity. FMB Builders will become HOPE Builders by supporting families to build their way out of poverty. Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful charity and I would urge FMB builders and all construction companies in Northern Ireland to support their work. Please donate at www.justgiving.com/FMBNI and let’s build as many homes as possible in the developing world.’
