Habitat begins rebuilding following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines
Habitat for Humanity Philippines has started a new phase in its response to super tyhoon Haiyan which struck the country two months ago. More than 850 houses will now be built by Habitat in the City of Tacloban for families that lost their homes to the natural disaster.
The houses will be built at a 10-hectare resettlement site provided by the City of Tacloban. Habitat has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine government’s National Housing Authority and the City of Tacloban for the rebuilding project.
Habitat aims to build 30,000 core houses, 20-square metres in size, in the communities most affected by the super typhoon, depending on funding available. The houses are designed to be disaster resistant and affordable.
More than 1.1 million homes were either damaged or destroyed by the super typhoon.
As part of the initial emergency response, Habitat helped more than 10,000 families with emergency shelter and shelter repair kits, and will continue shelter repair kit distributions as rebuilding projects get under way.
