Of the world’s seven billion people, 2.5 billion people do not have access to proper hygiene facilities and 1 billion people are forced to go to the toilet in the open. Poor sanitation increases the risk of disease and malnutrition, especially for women and children.
This year, World Toilet Day aims to raise greater awareness of the consequences of inadequate sanitation drawing the world’s attention to the importance of toilets in supporting better nutrition and improved health.
At Habitat for Humanity we view proper sanitation as being vital for having a decent place to live. Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) training are key elements of our programmes which funds raised in Northern Ireland are supporting in India, Cambodia and Ethiopia.
