Last weekend we decorated for Christmas. As I arrived from work yesterday the lights were shining bright in our warm, safe home a beautiful reminder of the promise that "the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it."

Our world is full of pain, disaster and conflict which is devastating lives and has caused an unprecedented number of people – more than 122 million - to flee their homes. In that world so full of need it is small, everyday acts of kindness which create ripples of change.

Since Habitat began in 1976 we have helped 62 million people build or improve the place they call home. One home, one family at a time, and a legacy which transforms the future for generations.

This Christmas we are again raising funds to provide stoves and firewood for vulnerable people in Ukraine enduring another year of war. The conflict has destroyed Ukraine’s infrastructure, decimated businesses and levelled homes as families flee for their lives, taking little or nothing with them, desperate for stability, warmth, and a place to be safe.

We have already supported vital construction repairs of more than 619 homes and provided upgrades to apartment blocks in Odessa helping more than 2,700 people.

To date we have delivered more than 500 stoves, manufactured in Kyiv at a cost of £100/€120, which have brought light and hope in the darkness of war; bringing warmth and a place to cook a bowl of soup when the power is out again.

"Bring light to a dark and desperate world. Be the hero you are looking for… It begins with us." - L.R. Knost

This Christmas, as you give thanks for the blessings of a warm, safe home, please be a light in the darkness of war by donating whatever you can afford so we can order more stoves to reach more families displaced by war in Ukraine. It begins with us...

Wishing you all the hope, joy and love of Christmas,

Jenny Williams, Chief Executive
