Impact and humanitarian situation

More than 18.3 million people live in the affected area.

According to media reports, several buildings have collapsed in the city of Mandalay. Significant road damage has also been reported in the capital, Naypyidaw. Aftershocks continue, increasing the risk of further destruction. In Sagaing Township, more than 70% of buildings were severely damaged. Numerous residential buildings have collapsed. Two bridges on the Yangon-Naypyidaw highway were also damaged, jeopardizing transport links.

More than 2,000 deaths have been confirmed so far; according to the US Geological Survey, the death toll could exceed 10,000.

The earthquake exacerbates the current crisis in the country with armed conflict, political instability, and natural disasters causing Myanmar to be one of the countries with the highest humanitarian needs in the world. Around 20 million people—about one-third of the population—rely on humanitarian assistance.
